This park offers a fantastic vantage point for whale watching and photography. Stroll along the historic 804 Trail, a 0.75-mile path featuring resting benches where you can pause to take in the stunning scenery.
The area is renowned for tidepooling, rock fishing, and the annual smelt run—an event showcasing these small, silvery salmon relatives. Don’t miss the awe-inspiring sunsets that paint the sky with brilliant hues, making this park a true treasure for nature enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
Just north of Yachats between The Adobe Resort and The Overleaf Resort and Spa you will find the easiest access to the 804 trail at Smelt Sands. Rocky beaches make for beautiful wave breaks and a fantastic view of Yachats’ pristine sunsets. Easy parking and bathrooms make this a great stop on your Yachats outings.
History
The land was acquired from private owners in 1971 and 1972. After 15 years of dedication by community-minded citizens, the adjacent former county road right-of-way, known as the Yachats 804 Trail, was officially designated in 1990 for public recreational use as a scenic hiking trail. - Don't play on driftwood logs or on eroding rocky areas.
- Always stay on the designated trails, don't climb over fences or barriers.
- Check seasonal restrictions before planning a campfire on the beach, as they aren't always allowed.
